Christmas Surf!

Finally, Christmas holiday is over us. It’s been a super hectic month for me in Denmark so far, since I have been focused on writing my final high school exam report. This meant many sleepless nights, alone with cans of Red Bull as my only company. But now it’s over, it’s holiday and time for some Christmas surf :)

On the morning of Christmas Eve more than 20 surfers from all around Cold Hawaii and Klitmøller met up in Nr. Vorupør to share some waves and have a blast. Dress code: Nissehuer / Christmas hats. Guys were chanting Christmas carrols out on the water and enjoying some frigid waves before heading home to their families to celebrate the holidays. Even Santa Claus made a short appearance on a surfboard ;) Super fun day with some great friends !
Check out this short clip my brother put together of all the action:

Hurricane Session in Cold Hawaii

Today will be a day, that not soon will be forgotten. When we looked at the weather charts a week ago we saw it coming, but we never anticpated a storm of this magnitude! The storm peaked in the middle of the afternoon with gusts of 38 meters per second measured in Hanstholm, which above hurricane force. We grouped up at our place in Klitmøller and set out on a search mission to get the best of this crazy storm :)

Hurricane force winds slamming Cold Hawaii !

We ended up driving north and taking a plunge just as the storm was at its peak. Peter, Oliver and myself suited up and jumped into the oceanic cauldron of chaos with our surfboards. The conditions were insane! We caught a few good ones and left just as the gusts started ripping roofs of nearby houses. What a day :)

Naish La Torche Pro – Day 2 + 3

It’s been two busy days on the beach here at La Torche, France. The sun has been shining, the beach has been packed with spectators and the waves have been pumping for the contest!

The coach Joachim Bech is here and the waves are pumping for real !

On the second day of competition I started out in the quarter finals of the trials. It was a tough heat against Hawaiian Kody Kerbox and 2 other French surfers. I managed to find 2 good scoring waves and passed through the heat in 2nd place behind Kody. I was over the moon! This meant I had secured a spot in the main event of the Naish La Torche Pro.

The Na Kama Kai Youth Challenge (U16) event was run in between heats of the trials. The young kids from all over the world were ripping big time! These kids are the ones that will dominate this sport in the future!

In the Na Kama Kai Youth Challenge my brother Peter did very well. Peter lost the semi final heat because he was having too much fun and had to sit out the last 5 minutes of the heat.

In the semi final I had nothing to lose. I gave it all I had and once again advanced along with my Naish team mate Kody. It’s hard to describe the feeling of joy that was running around inside me. I had never dreamt of making it this far in an event, which I only came to to see how the level was and what is possible on a stand up paddle board in the waves. In the final the waves shut down and I unfortunately did not manage to string 2 great waves together. I finished 4th in the final, but I was still super stoked to be surfing among such great company :)

1st Kody Kerbox (HAW), 2nd Kieran Taylor (AUS), 3rd Greg Closier (FRA), 4th Casper Steinfath (DEN)

On the 3rd day of competition the main event got under way. The conditions were mixed with small 3-4 foot waves with light onshore winds. I thought to myself that these conditions reminded me very much of back home in Klitmøller, Denmark. I was super amped to go surf my heat! In heat 6 of round 1 I was up against world #5 and Brazilian longboard and SUP champ Leco Salazar along with Frenchmen Stephane Iralour and Yann Quilfen. A tough heat, but a good heat. I had a chance at making it through and directly in to the 3rd round. And so I did. The waves were super rippable and i netted 2 long waves with fun and powerful turns. I could not believe when the announcers said over the speakers, that “Casper Steinfath from Denmark will be moving into the 3rd round”

Good times in France

Hopefuly the predicted new swell will fill in on Wednesday and the competition can resume.

Local Charger Smider Pushloop!

My first ever Pushloop from Mathias Lyngs on Vimeo.

Keep it up !

Great news for the Surftour 2011 !

Great news for the surftour 2011 !

Surftour is proud to announce a new major sponsor that will host the first competition of the 2011 Danish circuit.

Plasma Boardriding Inc. has stepped up and will host the Plasma Spring Sessions; an event that will set new standards for competitions in Denmark. We’re talking new features such as side events and a big party at a secret place and time in Klitmøller during the event. More info will come in the coming week. (week 12)

Important: Dates changed!

To ensure an optimal event and the best possible waves for all the competitors the event will enjoy a 3 day waiting period during the Easter holiday.

The event will not run on the 2-3 of april as originally planned, but instead at the most optimal time during the period 23-24-25 of april.

The Surftour hopes this will make for an even better event with even more competitors and spectators. We apologize for any inconveniences this may create and we are looking forward to a great event that will bring together surfers from all around Denmark and beyond! Winter is over and it is time to leave our caves of winter and meet up with our friends for some good days of surf!

Stay tuned to www.surftour.dk and the “Surftour DK” facebook page for more information on the Plasma Spring Sessions !

Kai Lenny wins 2011 Sunset Pro

Yesterday 18 year old Kai Lenny from Maui won the first stop on the 2011 Stand Up World Tour. His impressive water skills were obvious to everyone already from round 1. In the 4 man final Lenny pulled it off by showing some solid surfing and making numerous radical moves on his Naish board.

Thumbs up to 18-year-old waterman Kai Lenny

Robin Johnson from Hawaii gave Kai a good fight for the 1st place, but when the buzzard sounded he found himself 0,10 points behind Kai. The 2nd and 3rd places went to respectively Peyo Lizarazu and Zane Schweitzer.

It was really fun watching the event’s live webcast and seeing the guys go big and push the limits of stand up paddling. The Sunset event has set a good standard for the rest of the 2011 world tour, and it has really fired me up to hit the frigid waters and do some serious training in the waves.

From April 30th to May 8th the Stand Up World Tour will come to Britanny, France, for the 2nd event of 2011. I am planning on heading down to do the trials of this event with my coach Joachim Bech and hopefully we will learn loads from all the top guys. Let’s hope the winter doesn’t stick around Klitmøller too much longer :)
